The Inspiring Story of Takahashi Bird Pins by Julia C. Carroll and Carol Takahashi

After Pearl Harbor, Japanese Americans Yoneguma and Kiyoka Takahashi and their three young sons were incarcerated at the Poston III internment camp. While there, the Takahashis participated in a class where they learned the art of carving and painting bird pins using meager materials scrounged from the camp. From the beginning, the couple excelled at the craft.

Following their release, the Takahashis started a home-based business making and selling handcrafted bird pins, an enterprise that would last for 40 years . This book is a celebration of their lives, their legacy, their art. Lushly illustrated with 400 color photographs of rare bird pins, it include details of carving and painting techniques along with information about the reproductions authorized by Carol Takahashi and created by artisan Jerry Simchuk for sale by Manzanar History Association. This recently released volume is a rich resource for historians, artists, and collectors.
